kernel is a program that contitutes the central core of operating system.it has complete control over everything that occurs in computer.kernal is the first of the operating system that load into memory during booting its remain there until the computer turned off.
what kernal do?
kernel provide interface between application and hardware.its primarypurposeisto manage the computer resources and allow the program to run and use these resources(CPU,MEMORY,INPUT OUTPUT DEVICES).

your interface to operating system is called shell.
Bassically there two types of interface
GUI(graphical user interface)[using graphics images icons]
CUI(Character user interface)[using commands ,only text]
what shell do?
there is a problem with kernel, kernal only understand low level languages,which is 0 and 1,when as a normal human we are unable to give instruction to computer in form of 0 and 1.we use high level language,there is the use of shell,shell provides interface between user and kernel.
